Analysis and reflections on the possibilities and limitations of applying play to utilitarian applications following the creation of a vertical slice of a questionnaire app that was intended to be part of the transmedial art project by Danish filmmaker Michael Madsen. His vision for the whole project was to create an experience where the audience would be co-creators and as such create engagement between (future) viewers or visitors of any of the Search experiences. The thought experiment would serve to test the user’s suitability to partake in an inter-generational one way space journey to colonize a new habitat for mankind. The user is provoked to reflect on herself, humanity and her willingness to make sacrifices to enhance the future of mankind.
In a collaboration with Step In Books, my role in the project was to conceptualize and create a vertical slice for Michael Madsen and Step In Books. The prototype served as the foundation for a paper on playfulness and play in utilitarian applications. We wanted to investigate to what extent play can be applied to utilitarian applications without them losing their original purpose. The project is not published.
Master thesis project in collaboration with Kristian Svane Rømer and Step In Books, supervised by Miguel Sicart.
